Mary M. BELL's well documented "Tevis Family" is now available from the author. She has Melancthon TEVIS (11 N 1862, Brooksburg, Jefferson Co., IN - 10 Apr. 1928, Brooksburg, b. & d. same house; s/o Robert M. TEVIS & Christi Ann COTTON [also spelled Christine & Christian{n}]) m. 19 Oct. 1887, Jefferson Co., Anna B. GRAY (28 Mar. 1868/9, IN - 1 July 1890, bu. Pleasant Ridge Cem., Jeffn. County) d/o Calvin R. GRAY & Sarah Eliz. BROOKS.Melancthon "Lam" TEVIS m2. 21 Jan. 1892, Alice GRAY (11 Nov. 1870, IN - 7 Jan. 1964, Madison, IN) d/o Ebenezer GRAY & Emma MONROE.Melancthon & Alice are also bu. Pleasant Ridge.
First wife Anna had son Byron Whitefield TEVIS (24 Oct. 1888, Jeffn. Co. - 12 Jan. 1933, Madison, IN) m. 25 Oct. 1911, Edith GARDNER.
The children of the second marriage were b. Switzerland Co., IN:
Harry Beard (21 Oct. 1892 - 19 Apr. 1960, Madison, IN) m. 14 Oct. 1913, Ethel HOLMES.
Kyle (27 Mar. 1894 - 3 S 1963, Madison) m1.14 Aug. 1912, Doris COOPER; m2. 28 Mar. 1931, Ada [ROBINSON] GRAY; m3. 28 D 1935, Janet [McGLASSON] OTT; m4.29 Apr. 1939, Anna [CHAPMAN] HASTINGS.
Bruce Scott (11 Je. 1896 - 11 July 1968, Madison, IN) m. 8 Mar. 1916, Blanch ARMSTRONG.
Sally (11 Aug. 1900 - 25 Jan. 1963, Carrollton, KY) m1. 14 N 1917, John Maxwell RYAN; m2. Roscoe JENKINS.
Christine, twin (11 Aug. 1900 - 16 S 1969, Jeffn. Co.) m. 26 D 1917, Clarence CROXTON.
Graham G. (23 S 1902 - 31 Mar. 1981, Madison) m. 1 Je. 1921, Edith A. SCHOOLCRAFT.
Note that there are a few corrections from the information I had before. Most importantly, the Madison Daily Herald, Mad., IN, 10 Apr. 1928, p. 4, which must be an obituary, is given as a source of Melancthon's parents. There is also a family Bible, privately owned.
The Robert TEVIS family is difficult to find on the 1880 census database because he was listed in Milton, Jeffn. Co., IN, as K. V. TEVIS, 46, IN KY IN, physician; wf. Christian, 39, IN IN PA; & children John, Malanthas, Julia, Lillia(n), Harry, Mary, Sallie, Charlie, Ida; & brother Edwin R., 23, KY KY IN, physician. The names fit the family of Robert TEVIS, who later had Nellie, b. 11 F 1881, & Portia Roberta, b. 24 Oct. 1883.Benjamin TEVIS & Mary BROOKS (m. 20 N 1834, Jeffn. Co.) were parents of Melancthon (19 Jan. 1839 - 5 Mar. 1863, Memphis, died in the Civil War).Benjamin TEVIS (1845 - 1916, s/o Benj. & Mary) & Lois COLEMAN also had Melancthon (1866 - 10 Aug. 1899, KC, MO). [1880 Census & KC Star, 11 Aug. 1899, p. 2]. The database has him as Melan__, 14, & Eva as Ewa, in 1880.So, there were at least three men named Melancthon, named for Philipp SCHWARTZERD, German theologian, author of the Augsburg confession, 1530, a basic creed of Protestantism.[SCHWARTZERD in Greek is MELANCTHON.]
Both of the GRAY families were on the 1880 Census, Milton, IN.Anna was twelve then, so she may have been b. 1868, even though her tombstone says b. 1869.
