Lost Tevis Family (KY)
My wife and I have two sons born with a very rare genetic disorder (Alpha Thalassemia Mental Retardation Syndrome {ATR-X}) that is passed on the X-Chromosome from the mothers.Because of this, we have been trying to trace family history. One major problem we face is trying to find the biological family of my wife's mother. My mother-in-law was given over to another family to raise when she was a child. My mother-in-law was born in Lexington, KY on October 1, 1935.We have been told her mothers last name was Tevis and she was delivered by a Dr. Hughes. My mother-in-law has red hair and has been told she looks just like her mother. We also believe she may have had a sister or half sister. There are no adoption papers...she was just given over to another family to raise. Her adoptive mother (now deceased) never told her anything about her biological family. Rumor was the woman that gave her up was Jewish. The disorder that our sons have is predominately a blood disorder amoung people along the Mediterranean coast. Both our sons are mentally and physically retarded and have a blood disorder called Alpha Thalassemia with Hemiglobin H inclusion. They are also mute. It is most likely there are other decendants in this family that have boys with mental and physical disabilities and/or who may have died at early ages.If anyone has information that would help, please contact us.
