Hello there Keith,

Also my first visit to this message board and low and behold I am also descended from Matthew who married Ellen Golby 17th Oct. 1845

William Henry Emmanuel Mary Ann GEORGE HENRY Thomas
b.21 Jan. 1862

Gt Grandfather George had William James, GEORGE & Lily

Grandfather GEORGE had JOYCE John Gladys Kathleen (Betty) Joyce was my late Mother. I spoke to both her and my late Aunt Betty about the family history and they actually remembered Emmanuel as Uncle Manny!! so he must have lived to a good age. Mum died in 1997 aged 88 and Aunt Betty in 2000 aged 81.

Just a word of caution Keith. Prior to Matthew I have James as his father c 18th March 1786 Withyham. James's father was also James c. 10th Feb. 1754 Horsted Keynes and his father was William for whom I have no further info as yet other than that his wife's name was Elizabeth. As you see the same names appear all the way down the line!
Have you heard the family tale of William and Henry going away to sea and their mother keeping a light in the window for them ever after?
The Matthew on the 1851 census would have been only 13 yrs old when marrying Ellen in 1845. Did you notice on the 1861 census of Shoreham that Ellen said she came from Darkin that fooled me for a while until I realised that she must have had a lovely rich accent as she came from Dorking!

It seems that we are both descended from Matthew does that make us 3rd cousins? I'm never sure on this.

Hope to hear from you soon. Elizabeth e.jezard@tiscali.co.uk
