Terwilliger is mentioned in a book that the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce office published in 1915. It says: "Hotel New York 304 Fourth Avenue under the management of J.J. Terwilliger, formerly of Browns Inn, Newfoundland, New Jersey. Hotel New York is ideally located two blocks from the beach and has modern improvements, having been recently enlarged and improved. Capacity 100. The table is a special feature, being liberal in its service and offering. From the Images of America series on West Milford "Browns Inn was located at the junction of the present day Route 23 and Green Pond Road. The bandstand of the hotel still exists at the corner along with the railroad depot building, which was for the Newfoundland stop on the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad. The property is now owned by Jefferson Township. Browns Inn founded by Peter Brown in 1817. Brown married Elizabeth Kanouse daughter of John George Kanouse, who had immigrated from Holland with his family in 1720. Brown managed Browns Inn until 1844. Son John P. Brown assumed management, John P. Below information from the New York Times-Death notice-published 1901 THEODORE BROWN home "Browns Inn" Newfoundland, NJ, was the fifth generation of the Dutch family BRAUN, resident in the valley of Pequannock River. About a century and half ago there was an incursion of Dutch Settlers into this hill country of Northern New Jersey, particulary to Newfoundland, Stockholm, and Charlotteburg.THEODORE BROWN, father, JOHN P. BROWN, made a hotel out of the roadhouse, founded previous to 1817 and interested himself both in the lumber and general merchandise business. He also had a government post route and stage line from New York to Port Jervis.About 10 years ago at the solication of his son, Theodore, the bar of the hotel was discontinued since which time Browns Inn has been a temperance house. The old KNAUSE house, the home of Theodore Brown's grandmother, is still standing and the stone cottage in which he was born has engraved upon it the initials of PETER SNYDER , "1773". His mother was one of the RYERSONS of this city.Mr. Brown was an ardent worker in the Presbyterian Church, of which he was an elder and Trustee, and was for many years the Superintendant of the Sunday school. He was also a Director in the Deckertown bank, a Republican, and took a keen interest in the political welfare of his country.He is survived by a widow, who was MISS TERWILLIGER of Middletown, NY and by two daughters.New York TimesPublished July 11, 1901
