The information below matches the information from Missy on the Mckenzie River/Willamette National forest/Cougar, Terwilliger Hot Springs posted July, 2008.

The book mentions that HIRAM TERWILLIGER arrived in the 1860s. He arrived in the 1840s on the Oregon Trail with his family. There are a few books that mention he arrived in the 1860s.

"...named for HIRAM TERWILLIGER who came to Oregon in the 1860s and is thought to be the first European to visit the hot springs"

Old-growth forest and "...only the most committed travelers attempted the narrow trail along the South Fork of McKenzie trail..."

The book was digitized and had more information about mining rights/summer resort/development...

Son of JAMES TERWILLIGER who built the first log cabin where Portland, Oregon was "born"...founder and pioneer of Portland, Oregon.
