Terrell Family Genealogy Forum
Based on information passed to me by researcher Paul Anderson (3944 Canfield Ave., Boise, ID 83704) in Jan 2001, John Terrill (who you call Andrew Jackson Terrell) was the son of Henry Terrill and Elizabeth Hoard. I was not able to find any of them before the 1880 census. Henry’s parents were William Terrill (b. 1796, Madison Co, Ky.) and Maggy Mitcham. This William can be found in: U.S. Census, 1830, Indiana, Lawrence Co, p. 101: Terrell, William.
An Andrew J. Terrell, 1st Cav F & G, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 14 Jul 1896 at Evansville, Ind., and served honorably until discharged on 13 Jul 1900 at Ft. Meade, Md., at the rank of sergeant. This from "Registers of Enlistments in the United States Army 1798-1914" Record Group M233, National Archives. We have another (?) Andrew J. Terrell of Lawrence Co Ind., of 2d Arty and 24th Coastal Arty, who enlisted on 17 Aug 1899 at Bedford, Ind., and was discharged as sergeant at Verdado, Cuba, on 16 Aug 1902. He then reenlisted on 3 Sep 1902 at Ft. Wood, N.Y.H., and was discharged as corporal on 3 Jul 1904 at Fort Wadsworth, N.Y. He reenlists on 14 Jul 1904 at New York City and is discharged as corporal on 15 Feb 1905 at Madison Barracks, N.Y. He then reenlists on 16 Feb 1905 at Madison Barracks, N.Y., and is honorably discharged as private on 20 Feb 1908 at Angel Island, California. Back again, he reenlists on 14 May 1908 at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., and is discharged as sergeant on 22 Apr 1910 at Ft. Morgan, Ala. He reenlists again on 16 May 1910 at Ft. Slocum, N.Y., and is discharged as sergeant on 15 May 1913 at Ft. Mills, Philippine Islands. Since these Archives records only extend to enlistments made through 1914, you will have to seek further service records from the National Records Center at St. Louis, Mo. If he had a service number, it is not listed in the Archives records. He alternately lists his place of birth as Huron, Ind., and Lawrence Co, Ind.
