Do follow up by contacting the Terrell Society either by e-mail or regular mail. Most of their members and names are southern. In fact, when I first contacted them, my northern line was a new one. They have so much info that someone must be able to help with a connection or have a suggestion for research. And who knows, they might even know about some adoptions if that is where you think the path might lead.
Have you tried locating the Civil War records? It's definitely a long shot since he died so young but ... What do wills and land records tell you about the family you have found? Are there names on them that could be relatives? Have you done cluster research using neighbors on the census. There must be someone hiding somewhere. Sorry I cannot be more help.
