I met our red haired cousin Bennett BESS/BEST at Springfield, IL where he worked in a archives Library there several years ago.
Bennett is a son of Roscoe McKinley BESS/BEST and a grandson of Lorenzo BESS/BEST.
My great-grandfather Henry BESS/BEST was a tall, red haired and had a red beard with large hands and long fingers. Dad said Henry could hold a grandchild in one hand and lift them straight up with that one hand, even the older ones. He looked like a mountain man in his photos.
I have photos of Henry and one of him with his brothers and sisters when they were older on the US GEN WEB Fayette Co, Illinois site on-line. Great-grandfather Henry is the one in the light colored coat and vest.
It must have been taken 1910 to 1920 at one of their old farmhouses, probably west of Vandalia, IL.
My father Clarence Lloyd HIMES b. 1915 is one of the older grandchildren. He remembers his maternal grandfather Henry very well.
