Tenley - Maryland/Washington
George Tenley, a Native American from the Piscataway Tribe, marriedMary Jane Webster when he was about 25.Theyhad 4 children.Mary Jane died of childbirth complications soon after the birth of Annie Violet.George was left with the 4 children who were age 13, 10, 3, and a daughter of a few months.
About a year after Mary Jane’s death, George married Sarah Day who was about age 35 at the time.Sara gave him 9 children in 11 years. Then she died.
Evidently Sara had enough on her plate without being concerned with churchgoing and christenings, so the last seven children were late baptisms, 5 on the day of their father's marriage to Eliza Jane White, which incidentallywas ChristmasDay, 1884.Eliza was about age 38 when she marriedGeorge. It’s interesting to note that the 1880 census shows an Eliza White, age 34, as a single boarder in George Tenley's home. She was perhapsGeorge and Sara’s nanny or housekeeper. His marrying Eliza, someone already in the home and knowing the family, certainly couldn't have hurt George's situation - but then poor Eliza was left with a number of these children when George diedafter only four years of marriage. They had no children of their own.
George had a General Store, shown on various maps of the time, located on what is now Pyles Lumber Company, Clinton, Maryland. He had a home a few miles away on what is now Andrews Air Force Base.
Although not proven, George Tenley may have been the son of a Henry Tenley of Prince George's County.Henry had 2 wives:Felly Tenley, whom he marriedin Washington D.C. February 13, 1812, and Elizabeth Talbert, whom he married in Prince George's County December 7, 1820.
