John DeMott TenEyck (1808-1895)
Seeking the father of John DeMott TenEyck, born on July 5, 1808, in Hunterdon Co., New Jersey, to Leah DeMott (1783-1848), who on September 11 christened him "John Ten Eyke" (sic) by herself, without an accompanying father, at the Readington Reformed Church.
Leah is not known to have married and may have raised her only child in the home of her parents, Dirck DeMott (1751-1819) and Martha Snedeker (1756-1824), next to whom she was buried in the DeMott Family Burying Ground in Readington Township, two miles southeast of Whitehouse, Hunterdon Co.
John used the surname DeMott in school but adopted the surname TenEyck as an adult, using it to marry Joanna D. Stillwell (1808-1893) in Hunterdon Co. on December 9, 1829. He died in Whitehouse on January 14, 1895.
He and Joanna raised three children: Jeremiah S. (1834-1915) who married Elizabeth VanderVeer, John M. Schenck (1835-1910) who married Harriet Mahon Messler, and Emily Teresa (1840-1929) who married Henry Calvin VanderVeer (Elizabeth's brother). Three infants died within a year: Michael D. (1831), Margaret Jane (1832), and Leah Elizabeth (1838). Jeremiah and Elizabeth named their only son, John DeMott TenEyck (1866-1942), after his grandfather.
