Descendants of John & Margaret TENER of Baltimore Co, MD
Thefamily tree belowfor John and Margaret TENER of Baltimore Co, MD is a synthesis of information received from cousins in Highland County, OH,Lee Anne Crossfield (a very meticulous researcher), and my own research on their son Adam Tener. The tree is posted here to help others correct the many errors seen on this site and Ancestry’s public family trees for their son Adam's and and his wife Frances’ family. Many family trees show their children born in Highland County, OH, this is not correct.Adam and Frances moved to Warren Twp, Jefferson Co, OH in 1813 and purchased a 168 acre farm there.Between 1814 and 1816, Adam purchased three separate 160-acre parcels in Perry Twp, then in Wayne Countynow in Ashland Co, OH.In Apr of 1815, Adam and Frances sold their farm in Jefferson County and moved to Wayne County, OH.They sold their last piece of land in Wayne County on 8 Nov 1826.Adam began paying taxes in Liberty Twp, Highland Co, OH in 1837 (listed as TEANER).Thus the children born between 1813 and 1826 were born in Wayne Co, OH.We have documentation that Jacob (b. 1819) was born in Wayne County [ref. 23].We have an obituary for Charles (b. 1822) [ref 25] that states he was born in northern Ohio.Charles’ obituary comments that there were 13 children born to Adam and Frances Tener.Sampson Tener was not one of the 13, he was the son of Jacob Tener, Adam’s brother.By 1853, only nine children are listed as heirs to their mother’s 28 acre farm in Liberty Twp, Highland Co, OH.Matilda Tener, their daughter, was my g-g-grandmother.
A brief comment on the birth location of John and Margaret TENER.In the book “TENER, A History of the Family in France, Ireland and America (1949),” at page 10, there are the following statements:
“The families of Teners living in and coming from Adams County, Ohio trace back to one, Jacob Tener born about 1767 who went to Ohio from Maryland and their family tradition variously claims Co. Tyrone, Ireland or Germany as the place from which their ancestors emigrated.”
One post here was clever enough to look at the 1880 Census for John P. Tener, son ofPhilip Tener, and noted that he gave information that his mother and father were born in Germany.Of equal interest is that Philip’s son John stated in 1880 that is father was born in Germany and his mother in Maryland.I have not been able to find a descendant of Philip’s brother Henry Tener, the second son of John and Margaret. However, Joseph Tener, son of George Tener, the third son of John and Margaret, states in the 1880 census that his father and mother’s birthplace was Maryland. We might conclude from this that John and Margaret arrived in America between 1756 – 1764. We cannot conclude that John and Margaret were born in Germany based on the Census information, buttheir son Philip was born in Germany, and perhaps Henry as well.It is likely John and Margaret emigrated from Germany.
In the “Tener book,” mentioned above, at p. 14, there is a statement regarding a branch of the family that moved to Germany in the 1600s.“Religious persecution was responsible for mass migrations [from France] to Germany, Switzerland, England and Ireland throughout the next two centuries [1600s and 1700s].Paul Tenere (VIII) moved to Rethel in 1609.His brother Guillaume, Celeste, a sister of Hugh Tenere (IX) all removed to and settled in Franenthal Germany.”
Also of note, is an acknowledgement on page 11 (Part 1), that the author, Hampdon Evans Tener II, relied on a genealogical report made by Gustave Anjou of New York.Readers might want to Google this person.
My apologies for the lack of formatting, it was lost when I pasted it here.
