Elaine:

Let me offer at little better response since I've gone back to my files and gotten some information. Elijah Teeple was 6th of 13 children born to Isaac and (Maria) Catherine Castner Teeple. He was born 7 Jan 1799 and died 5 Feb 1873. He was married three times: (Maria) Louisa Reagan, Dorcas Sampson and Elizabeth Thomas. Elijah and all three wives are buried in the Van Voorhis (Also known as Hazelkirk) Cemetery. A cemetery transcript (VVCT)is on-line. The first names in parenthesis appear to be saint's names, a "German" naming convention.

There is a "Teeple Bible" transcript that offers confirming evidence to John S. Van Voorhis "The Old and New Monongahela" pp. 261-267 (The Teeple Family) 1893, reprinted 1974. Also, for your specific family there is, " The Sampson Family" by Lilla Briggs Sampson, 1914. (pp 174-6).

The Teeple Bible transcription (ca 1871) stops with Elijah's brother's (Christopher's) marriage to Sarah Deardorff in Ohio in 1826, so I think that we can place Elijah marriage after that (but the Bible transcript may be incomplete). (Maria) Louisa Reagan married Elijah in the mid to late 1820's. Her oldest child may be either John M. (supported by the cemetery transcript) or Cynthia (order listed in Van Voorhis). The two other children are Ulysses R. (5 Feb 1836 - 10 Apr 1902) and Isophine (1838-1904) Teeple.
Cynthia (b. 1830 d. 25 Sep 1854) VVCT
John M. d. 18 Feb 1837 (12y-8m-13d) b. about 1825

Cynthia married John Yohe, Ulysses married Sarah Lynch in Marshall Co, IN (1869) and about 1882 Cynthia (possibly, Manaugh) in either Monroe or Wapello Co., IA. Isophine married John Van Voorhis.

M. L. Teeple's tombstone transcript reads d. 21 Feb 1810 (b. ??) 27y-1m-10d (but this places her death before Isophine's birth. A mystery.

Dorcas Sampson (22 Sept 1804 to 3 Feb 1847) m. 1 June 1841. She is the daughter of William Sampson (1765-1815) and Mary Neal (widow of Mr. Beazell) Mrs. J.H. Teeple wrote about Dorcas, "she was a beautiful women, fair, with blue eyes, and golden bronze hair, That she was as good as she was beautiful; a devout Christian, perfect wife and mother, loved and respected by all who knew her."

Two children, John (not sure where I got the name) who died as an infant and James Harvey b. January 1844 (1900 Census, Carroll Twp, Washington Co., PA p. 259). He died after 1910 (as did his wife Lavina, b. April 1859) Dorcas had three siblings Harvey, Thomas and James. James Harvey appears to be named for two of them (or at least, they are family names).

James Harvey and Lavina () Teeple have three children: Eunice d. 30 Oct 1874 (VVCT), Isa (Icie) and Bertrum (Bertrand in Census records). Icie Todd (her husband and daughter, Mary) are living with James H. Teeple in 1900.
By 1920, Bertrand and Bille have two sons, Kenneth (11) and Bertrand (10/12ths).

Elijah's third wife is Elizabeth Thomas (14 Sept 1807 to 26 Oct 1897) and m. 31 May 1848. They had no children. In the 1860 census, the two half brothers (Ulysses and James) are living with their father and step-mom, Elizabeth.

I hope this answers some of your questions. Please write directly or through this forum if you have any questions.

Paul
