Dear Charles,
All current Tebbett households in the U.K. are descended from one of five family groups.
The largest group can be traced back to North West Leicestershire in the 17th century. Nearly all modern day Tebbett's in the U.K. can be traced back to a single marriage at Ashby-de-la-Zouch,Leics.,on 13th April 1669 between William Tebbit and Sarah Clare. There are 111 Tebbett households in the U.K. and 982 households with name variations.Variations include Tebbatt,Tebbet,Tebbett,Tebbit,Tebbitt, Tebbitts,Tebbot,Tebbott,Tebbut and Tebbutt.
Because most of the early records would have been maintained by the clergy and dependant on literacy and pronounciation, some variation can be found within proven trees. The distribution of all households shows a concentration in the East Midland area. Leicestershire being fairly central.
Decendants of the Northamptonshire Tebbett's are known to have moved to the U.S.A. in 1882. I have little information on earlier immigrations, but many family trees end abruptly with male offspring.
