Joel Taylor, James Ervin Taylor, James Irvin Taylor, James Edwin Taylor
Several family trees on Ancestry.com list the James E. Taylor (below), born Ohio about 1821, as a son of James and Charlotte (Smith) Taylor, of Marlborough Township, Delaware County, and Westfield, Morrow County, Ohio. However, the evidence instead points to James E. Taylor as a son of Joel and Elizabeth (Ervin) Taylor of Waldo Township, Marion County, Ohio:
Joel Taylor of Marlboro Twp., Delaware County, Ohio (from which Waldo Twp., Marion County, Ohio was later formed), listed in his will (probated June term 1832) among his children James E. Taylor who was to get the west half of land in Range 19, Twp. 6, 2nd. Section.Another son of Joel, named Elam Taylor (24 Jan 1815 - 6 June 1884) was to get the east half of the 19-6-2 property. This Joel Taylor in his will also named a daughter Harriet born about the same time as the Harriet Taylor, daughter of James and Charlotte (Smith) Taylor, who married Joseph Good.Several researchers have confused her with Joel's daughter Harriet who married (in Delaware Co., Ohio) John Brundage, had 7 children, and moved to Iowa or out west.Other children of Joel Taylor named in his will were sons Eli, Arthur, and Joel (Joel Jr.) that were to divide equally the farm Joel was living on in Range 19, Twp. 6, Sect 1, 42 acres (joined on the west by the 19-6-2 property), 3 more daughters Eliza, Mary, and Emilia. Also mentioned was a $200 debt of Sophia Taylor and the heirs of Ann Taylor, also assumed to be possible daughters of Joel and Elizabeth.Joel's wife Elizabeth was named executor. The land mention in this will was in Marlboro Twp., Delaware County, Ohio then, and those 2 sections (quarters) are all that remains of Marlboro (sometimes shown as Marlborough) Twp., Delaware Co., Ohio since 1848 to the present year 2013 (1904).
James E. Taylor, born Ohio 1821-22, probably a son of Joel and Elizabeth (Ervin) Taylor, married about 1846-47 Susanna Mosler, born Ohio 1826-27.They lived in 1850 in Waldo Township, Marion County, Ohio, where James was a carpenter. In 1860, James E. Taylor, born Ohio 1820-21, cabinet maker, and wife Susana, born "Pennsylvania" 1826-27, lived in Waldo Township with 2-year old twins (64).James may have enlisted in Company K, 66th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 19 November 1861, as a Private. He is said in at least one source to have died in the war 17 July 1862 and to be buried at Waldo, Marion County (1904).However, in 1870, James E. Taylor, born Ohio 1823-24, carpenter, and wife Susann, born Penna. 1827-28, still lived in Waldo Township (65).James, age 58, carpenter, and "Susean," age 53, were in Waldo Township with their 2 youngest children in 1880 (66).Susanna Taylor died in 1889 and is buried as Susanna Taylor, 1827-1889, in Waldo Cemetery, Waldo Township, Marion County (3692).
Two of their children provide clues to James Taylor's middle name: the obituary of Nettie Stiffler calls her parents Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Taylor and another daughter, Anna Fritch's obituary, death certificate, and 50th wedding anniversary article has her parents as Irvin Taylor and Suzanne Mosler. Thus Ervin or Irvin or Edwin may be James E. Taylor middle name.
