My great grandparents settled in Glen Ullin ND, in the late 1880s or 90s. Teresa was a fashionable woman, of course wearing a lovely hat. When they boarded the train in Wheeling, WVA, the hat was appropriate for the weather of early March. But when she got off the train in Glen Ullin, it was woefully lacking in any warmth for the frozen ND tundra. It was said that if she would have had the money, she would have walked right back onto that train and headed back to WVA.
All that we know of Teresa Rolfe Tavis is that she was from Wheeling, West Virginia. She married John Tavis there, and about 3 years later they headed west to ND. They had quite a few children, including Frances, Mame, Therese, Philomena (my grandma), Helen, Agnes, Louis, and Frank. There may have been more girls, but I can't remember them.
Any info on either of them would be appreciated-thanks!
