The Chehalis Bee-Nugget Friday March 15, 1929
Incident to the deaths of Wenzel and Jim Tauscher a brief history of the Tauscher family and it’s impress on the history of Lewis County the past 43 years will be of special interest at this time. The original home of the Tauscher family was in Bukowina, Austria, and more particularly that part which was best known as Roumania. The ancestors were farmers, tilled the soil and were useful citizens. In the year 1887 four of the Tauscher brothers decided to migrate to the United States. Two other brothers stayed in their native land. Those who came to this country were Wenzel Tauscher, Frank Tauscher, Ambrose Tauscher and Joe Tauscher.
They went first to Ellis, Kansas probably due to the fact that friends had preceded them there. Three months later it was decided by three of them to move to Lewis County. As a result, Wenzel, Frank and Ambrose brought their families to Chehalis.Joe came the following year early in 1888. However, he concluded to return to Kansas and went back to Ellis after three years residing locally. His only relatives now living in this neighborhood are two grandchildren, Paul Weber of Chehalis and his sister Mrs. Jay Henry of Pe Ell. Their mother, Mrs. Jacob Weber, who died a few years ago, was a daughter of Joe Tauscher.
Ambrose Tauscher farmed for a short period after coming to Lewis County but after the building at Chehalis of Doernbecher furniture factory he and most of his sons went into that line of work. When the plant moved to Portland 29 years ago they and other employed went along. Some of his sons are now possessed of fortunes, having endeared themselves to Mr. Doernbecher by their industry, ability and faithful service. When he died some years ago these men were remembered handsomely in his will in the way of immense stock holdings in the Doernbecher Furniture Manufacturing Company which developed one of the largest furniture plants in the United States. Surviving relatives of Ambrose Tauscher, all of whom are well known to old timers at Chehalis are five sons, Wenzel, Frank, Charles and Paul of Portland and Rudy of Riverside California; also two daughters Mrs. Nik Auderer of Portland and Mrs. Della of New Era, Oregon.
Frank and Wenzel Tauscher engaged in farming near Chehalis, both developing fine farms on Logan Hill nine miles southeast of Chehalis, before their deaths. Surviving relatives of Frank Tauscher are the brothers and sisters of the late Wenzel Tauscher who died at Tacoma Saturday. The surviving relatives of Wenzel Tauscher are the brothers and sisters of Jim Tauscher whose death occurred Sunday at Portland.
It is stated that about two years ago it was figured that in all there were upwards of 300 members of the Tauscher family and their descendants, most of whom reside in Lewis county and in and around Portland. The list includes the sons and daughters of the four brothers who came here in the late eighties; and the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the four pioneers.
Most of the men are engaged in the occupations of their fore bearers of the Roumanian land, farming and dairying, and they are rated as among the most valuable citizens we have. Many of them have fine farms and are all industrious, good citizens in the neighborhoods in which they make their homes. To the women the same high tribute may be paid for they have made good homes and have reared their children well in the ways of good citizenship, thrift and industry.
