According to Canadian genealogists and many early records, the original spelling of our name was "Tétreau."

As far as I can tell, none of our family was engaged in the slave trade. Canada never had slavery as we know it because their agriculture didn't support it. None of our family entered the US much before the 1830's, by which time we had banned the importation of slaves. The great majority of our family came to New England and New York, and if any did go to the southern states, it may well have been after the Civil War. This may not be 100% accurate, but I feel it may well be! I would be interested in what others know.
