I've noticed several internet genealogies claim that John Tate, son of James Tate married Elizabeth McClanahan, but in looking at Chalkley's, it clearly states the following:
1794--February 25, John Tate, Jr., and Elijah McClenachan, Jr., surety. John Tate, Jr., and Elizabeth McClenachan, daughter of Elijah McClenachan, Sr. (consent). Teste: Elijah McClenachan, Jr., Letice Ann McClenachan.
It appears that the John Tate that married Elizabeth McClanahan may be John Tate, son of John Tate and Jane Steele and NOT James Tate, who died in in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, unless the "Jr." was just an unnecessary addition by the recorder in Augusta County.....
