William Tate of Virginia (1753-1830) married Nancy (Agnes) Mitchell of Philadelphia. They had four children:
Mary, Dorcas (b. 1782), John (who moved to Indiana about 1820), and Mitchell (b. Feb. 1786).
William Tate is buried in Smythe County, Virginia in the Tate Cemetery.
William was the son of John Tate and Mary Doak, who came here from Ireland.

The above information is from "The Pioneer Tate Family of Augusta County, Virginia," by Agnes Graham Sanders Riley of Lexington, Kentucky, published in the National Genealogy Quarterly, vol. 57, no. 3, Sept. 1969, pp. 179-192.

If you think this is your ancestor John who moved to Indiana, this will give you some documentation. I found this article at the Historical Society of Washington County, VA.
