Samuel Tate and Sarah Faulkner

There has been confusion among some researchers who have crossed the Samuel Tate who married Sarah Faulkner (sometimes listed as Sarah/Sallie Fortner) with my ancestors Samuel Tate and wife Sarah who moved to Bibb County AL and died there in the 1850s. Many of the said researchers have attributed children of the latter couple to the former couple, which is unfortunate and confusing for new researchers who are searching for the correct lines.
Today I found a short biography in an online 1882 book about Bond County Illinois that clearly identifies the former couple, their origins, lists her as Sarah Faulkner, and shows that they moved to Illinois (Marion County IL.

The following Samuel Tate, son of Robert Tate and Rachel Owen, with wife Sarah Faulker moved from NC to Maury County TN, then moved to Marion County, IL where they died.

The book from which this came was published in 1882 and is at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Fortunately, they also provide a digitized copy through a link there.

The info about Samuel Tate and Sarah Faulkner is about 65% down the webpage beginning on page 50 of the biographical section to page 51.

J. MATTINLY, physician, Mulberry Grove, specialist of the eye and  ear, also of the treatment and cure of cancers, who first saw the  light  of day July 7, 1813, in Lincoln County, Tenn.; son of Rollin, born  March 10, 1788, in North Carolina, who was a son of Richard MATTINLY, whose children were David, James, John, Rollin and Waring. The mother, Nancy LUTTRELL, was born March 31, 1793, and died May 13, 1881; she was the daughter of Michael LUTTRE, a Revolutionary soldier, and who lived to be almost  a  centena  [Page  51]  rian, the family being remarkable for their longevity. Our subject  removed  with his father to Alabama, in Jackson County, when he was a lad  of  tender years, where they resided until the year 1830, when they came to Marion County, this State [of Illinois], where his father died September 6, 1866. Very  much credit is due the subject of our sketch, as he was thrown upon his  own resources at an early age, leaving home  without  shoes or sufficient clothing to shield him from the inclement weather, and unable to read the simplest sentence in a newspaper. He hired out at $6 per month, and assisted in maintaining the family in the meantime. For five  years  he drove stage, and during that time he made use  of  his  spare  time  in improving his mind, being resolved, that as his temporal affairs were being advanced, that his mind should receive  its share also. He came to this township in 1839, and was married the  same year to Mary A. HUBBARD, who died  in  1840,  leaving one son, David Rollin. His second and last wife was Sarah TATE, born in Stokes County, N.C., September 9, 1809, daughter  of  Samuel  TATE,  born  in  Stokes County, N.C., in 1776, and died April 23, 1842, and  Sarah (FAULKNER) TATE, born in Wake County, N.C., in 1775, and died in 1853.  She bore him three children, two of whom are living - Lizzie, wife  of  John  T. BUCHANNON, Annie and Sarah E. Soon after he  came  to  this  place,  he entered a piece of land and began farming,  which  he  continued  until 1860. In the meantime he was reading scientific works,  medicine  being his favorite. February, 1861, he began practice  in  Greenville.  Since April 10, 1862, he has been located  here in Mulberry Grove,  giving especial attention to the treatment of the eye and ear, as  well  as cancer, treating them with success. He  has  200  acres  of  land, and considerable town property. The Doctor has done much  to  impress  upon the minds of the people the necessity of the  knowledge  of  phrenology and sexual science among the people.

1820 Maury Co., Tennessee Census:
Samuel Tate, 3 males under 10; 2 males 10-16; 2 males 16-26; 1 male 26-45; 1 female under 10; 1 female 10-16; 2 females 16-26; 1 female 26-45.

1840 Marion Co., Illinois census:
Samuel Tate: 1 male 60-70 (Samuel); 1 female 30-40 (Sarah); 1 female 60-70 (Sarah).

Samuel Tate estate found in Marion County Circuit Clerk's office probate book 1841-1844, pages 435, 437 and 438. (microfilm roll #1010804). A biography of Samuel's son-in-law, Jenkins Mattingly, states Samuel died April 23, 1842, however, the few documents I found in his estate file at the Marion County courthouse seem to indicate he died in 1844 (the earliest document dated May 1844). Per census records, it appears he and his wife had 11 children (not sure about the youngest daughter), in the approximate order listed. Some of the names are unknown, although most likely one of the daughters was named Elizabeth.
