Can anyone provide me with documentation to prove that SAMUEL TARVER and MARY BOYCE actually did have seven sons as always listed for them?
In 55 years of researching the Tarver family, I have NEVER found any proof of this. People just keep repeating it as gospel.
It is impossible that BENJAMIN TARVER (b.ca. 1761)(d. 1821, WILSON CO., TN) could be one of these sons, as Mary would have been too old to have been able to have children by that year.
Likewise, the information in THE UNITED STATTES BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY, p. 273, in the biography of Robert Allison Brown (b. 1803)in impossible.
This account states 'The great-great-grandfather of the subject of this sketch, on the Tarver side, was Benjamin Tarver, who emigrated from Wales to England and thence to Virginia, and who was poisoned by the Nodaway (sic) Indians on the river of that name. He left seven sons -- Thomas, Samuel, Andrew, William, James, Robert, and Benjamin. The last named died in Wilson county, Tennessee; Robert was killed at the battle of Guilford, North Carolina. They had one sister, who married John Oakes. ...."
According to this sketch, Robert Allison Brown (b. 1803) was son of Gen. John Brown (b. 1779) son of John Brown and Mary Little Tarver, daughter of Thomas Tarver, supposed son of Benjamin Tarver.
If the supposed son of Benjamin Tarver, Robert Tarver, was killed at the battle of Guilford Courthouse, NC, then Robert would have died in 1781....two years after his great-nephew, Gen. John Brown, was born!
If this account were true, then Benjamin who died in Wilson County, TN, (b. 1761) was a brother of the great-grandfather of Robert Allison Brown. This is impossible.
Also, the same story about being poisoned by the Nottoway Indians is credited to Samuel Tarver who married Mary Boyce.
Hope someone has proof one way or the other!
