According to the surname dictionaries in my library, Tarry and Terry were almost interchangeable, at least until BDM records started in 1837. In my case, Tarry only firmed up around 1822, when my 2 greats grandfather's generation appeared in census records. The 3rd great was known as Tarrey. IGI group all variants under Terry (Tarry, Tarrey, Terrey etc.).
The dictionary I read suggested that the name (in common with Terry) derives from DeThiery, but doesn't indicate whether that is a geographical derivation ('from' Thiery.
That said, I once did some research on geographical distribution of present day Tarry's, using BT's online phone directories and the electoral registers (via 192.com). I didn't complete it for all counties, but by a very long way, the highest density of Tarrys is in Nottingamshire (almost twice as many as the next county). There are probably less than 1000 of us registered to vote in the UK.
