According to Dr. E MacLysaght's SUPPLEMENT TO IRISH FAMILIES, " The TARPEYS are still to be found mainly in that part of the country to which they belong historically and traditionally, namely north Connacht province. Farranyharpy (Fearann ui Tharpaigh) in the parish of Skreen, Co.Sligo indicates their original homeland. Conmach O'Tarpy was Bishop of Leyney(Achonry) from 1220-1227, and references to members of the sept in medieval records relate to County Sligo. By the 17th century, they had spread into other Connacht counties (predominately Mayo) and in 1652 Thomas oge Tarpay was one of those who refused to sign the articles of surrender of Galway. The Franciscan Father Francis Tarpey, who was a professor of note at Louvain(Belgium), was educated at Galway (ca 1627) as well as at Rome... In Munster province it is better known as TORPEY...as such it occurs 3 times in the Co. Tipperary Hearth Money Rolls of 1665-7."
In my own research of the name, I wondered what larger septs the TARPEY/TARPYs might have been associated with and found they were among the followers of HEYNES/HYNES. Most of the TARPEY/TARPY heads of households listed in Griffith's Valuation ca 1857 were found in north Mayo(near Charlestown)down the eastern side of Mayo near the Roscommon border to northeast Galway. The number of families with this name declined considerably after 1900, due mainly to emigration.
