Hello Mary Frances,
Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.I think I can confirm your suspicions re: your family's alledged descent from Banastre Tarleton.Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton arrived in the (then) rebellious colonies with Cornwallis in 1776.He was present at the surrender at Yorktown (in fact, he was in command of the garrison at Gloucester Point and surrendered that post at the same time that Yorktown was being surrendered by Cornwallis' surordinate) in 1781, was paroled, and returned to England in January of 1782.He never returned to America, and so could not have fathered the John Tarletons born in 1790 and later. There were apparently some distant connections to Tarleton's family that had immigrated to America a couple of generations earlier and so were already "Americans" during the Revolution--it is not impossible that your Tarletons might be connected to them. You might be interested in reading the only biography of Banastre Tarleton, called "The Green Dragoon: the lives of Banastre Tarleton and Mary Robinson" by Robert D. Bass. This book is out of print now, but can be obtained from many libraries. Thanks again for the info--very interesting.
Sincerely,
Timaran
