Sarah,

Thank you for the information. This seems to be the right person. I found a J. Tarkington and a J.C. Tarkington listed in the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database. J.C. is shown as being in the 47th TN Infantry (Confederate); was he a son of J.W.?

The source of J.W. Tarkington siding with the Union is a recommendation made by Maj. Gen. U.S. Grant, asking that a colonel's commission be given to J.W. to raise a regiment of Tennessee Unionists. The commission was never granted as far as I can tell. Maybe at 53 years old he decided not to fight after all. It would be interesting if one or more of his sons fought for the Confederacy.

Thanks again!
