This is probably James White Tarkington, born 1806 and died 1868 in Dyersburg, TN. He was sheriff in Dyer Co., TN in 1865. He married Mary Helen Goff and they had fifteen children. According to my information, this line of Tarkingtons were in the Confederate army. The Tarkingtons in Indiana were in the Union Army and a couple of Tarkingtons in Arkansas were also in the Union army.
