Your post intrigued me. I had received this information from one of my husband's aunts over 30 years ago, and never really questioned it, as I was following other lines. However, it looks like Joseph was not the son of Joshua, but of Jesse. See Joseph's autobiography: http://www.tarkington.com/documents/doc_book_reverend.html In it, he clearly states he is the son of Jesse, son of Joshua. He gives his DOB as 10/30/1800.

Apparently, Joshua and Mary Polly Berry also had a son Joseph--the question is which is which? On ancestry.com entry (no doc) has the same marriage date as I do:

There seems to be some Tarkington-Tarkington marriages just to add to the confusion.

I will eventually try to sort all of this out....but not today!
