I can shed some light on what happened to the Tarbuttons in Tennessee. James' widow Mary traveled to Troup, Smith County, Texas in 1852 with at least 2 of her children: John C. and James Henry. She traveled with members of the Arnold and Rucker families. I am not certain if her daughters came to Texas at this time.

Mary died in 1879 in Troup.

James Henry married Mary H. Salmon in Troup. They had 6 children: Henry, Urana, Albert, Nora, Clara and Charlie. Henry married Carrie Elizabeth Arnold in 1899 in Smith County. They had 5 children: Thelma Elizabeth (my grandmother), Cecil Esther, Mary Anna, James Albert and Christelle. James Albert died in 1988 with no chldren.

John C. married Mary Rucker in Troup. He is shown in the 1880 census in Smith County Texas with his wife and 6 children.

I have more details on this if you are interested. I would certainly like any info on Joseph S. and James in North Carolina.
