John: Think there's a good chance we're related. The history my family in Canada has worked up commences with aSamuel Tapscott (1804-1888) from Culmstock, Devonshire who emigrated to Canada and arrived in Quebec on June 17th, 1836. I'm told there is a gravestone in the yard at a small church in Culmstock. Do you know the area?
Elsewhere in this Forum, people have speculated that the "Tapscott" name is from "Apse" a species of tree and "Cott" a word for house. I've always preferred a derivation from "aps" as in hops and "cott" as in cottage so that Tapscott is an abbreviation of what would have been a common saying - "let's go T'aps'cott-age". Though apocryphal I feel certain I'm descended from brewmasters.
