I found John Tapper in Giard, Clayton County, Iowa in the 1880 U.S. Census. He is 60, living with wife Matilda, 42, daughter Mary, 18, son Bradley, 8.
In 1900, John , age 80, is divorced and living with son Bradley, b. Oct. 1871, wife Sylvia, b. Feb 1896, and daughter Fay, b. March 1895. Bradley is the head of household. They are in Monona, Clayton Co, IA.
The household prior to Bradley's is that of James E. and Mary Tapper. James b. May 1844 in Iowa, father b. England, mother b. Ireland.
I was tracing Matilda trying to find her surname, which you provided (thanks). Wrong Matilda for me.
