i am writing this for my mother who is also a great granddaughter of hiram radcliffe tappan. her name is matilda horn purnell and her mother was nettie tappan horn. nettie's father was william tremper tappan who was hiram radcliffe tappan's son. he was born sept. 7 1867. there were 7 children in the family. william tremper, frank mcalpin (21 june 1869), susan marie , (18 march 1872), henry hermance( 20 nov. 1874), jane schoonmaker (15 nov. 1875), arthur naylor (13 may 1877) and florence doll, 1879.
hiram was married to catherine doll, daughter of john t. and mary ann schoonmaker doll. catherine was born in napanoch, ulster county, ny on nov 8, 1839.
i never met my great grandfather tappan. i do remember my grandmother nettie speaking of florence, her aunt. aunt florence was very interested in the daughters of the american revolution and had had a chapter named after her family's ancestor, domini doll, i think.
we have a lot more information on this family. they lived in kleg grange, maryland , near snow hill. catherine doll is buried in kleg grange, although my grandmother was never able to locate her gravesite. hiram is buried in arlington cemetary, section 17, grave 18290, with his second wife, alice p. truitt tappan.
as you will notice, we spell the tappan with an a not an e.
my son is named benjamin zenas tappan cannon, the tappan is in honor of his great grandmother's family.
if you would like more information , please contact us.and let us know what you know, please
matilda horn purnell and daughter, alice purnell cannon
