TAPLIN, AFRICAN AMERICAN

I am white, and several years ago I met an African American Taplin, and we keep in regular touch. She is from Bakersfield, CA, and her family is from Louisiana (I'm from Long Island). I recall a distant relative tell me that 1 or 2 of Col. John Taplin's sons moved from VT to Louisiana and at least one of them had a plantation with slaves. Does anyone know anything about this?

Also, did Mansfield Tapley (Col. John's father) have any other children? I found a Mansfield Tapley who lived in Cambridge and Charlestown, MA who died in 1732. Is this Col. John's father?
Much thanks.
