The Tapley Family of Georgia
The surname Tapley originated in Cornwall in Southwestern England. The village of Tapeley is located in Devonshire, England.
The earliest records of this line of the Tapley family in Georgia show that the family was in Richmond County, GA but later moved to the area located about halfway between Macon and Savannah, Georgia in the counties of Johnson, Oglethorpe and Emanuel.
Tarpley? Tapley (est. DOB abt. 1671)
I haven't been able to find the name of Hosea's father and mother, but it can be assumed that they came from England. They had 3 children - 1) Hosea Tapley, born Jan 4, 1691 in England; 2) Adam Tapley; and 3) Alexander Tapley.
Hosea Tapley [Sr.] (abt 1691-1778)
Hosea Tapley was born Jan. 4, 1691 in England and died March 21, 1778 in Northhampton, Co (now Caswell Co) NC. He married Sarah Moore, daughter of John Moore and Sarah Norris, who died after Aug. 7, 1781 in Northampton, Co (Caswell Co) NC. They had 4 children - 1) Hosea Tapley Jr, born abt 1710 in Surry Co/Gloucester Co, VA; died 1780 in Granville, Co, NC; 2) Sarah Tapley, born 1715 in Edgecombe Co, NC; died 1775 in Orange Co, NC; 3) Joel Tapley, born 1720; died abt 1791 in Richmond Co, GA; and Ann Tapley, born abt 1732, married John Short in 1753 in Northhampton or Edgecomb, NC.
Joel Tapley (1720-1791)
Joel Tapley was born abt 1720 and died abt 1791 in Richmond Co, GA. He married Mary "Polly Avent. They had 5 children: Judith, Elizabeth, William, Mary and Newhampton.
Newhampton "New" Tapley (abt 1740-1807)
Newhampton "New" Tapley was born abt. 1736 and died in 1807 in GA. In 1758, he married Elizabeth Avent, daughter of Thomas and Ursula Avent, in Johnston, Co, NC. They had at least 2 children - Sarah "Sally" Tapley and James Tapley [Sr.]
James Tapley, [Sr.] (1780-1855)
James Tapley, [Sr.] was born in 1780 in SC and died Sept. 26, 1855 in Emanuel Co, GA. He married Mary "Polly" Benson. I only have found the name of 1 of their children. They moved to Emanual GA sometime before James'death in 1855.
James M. Tapley (1814-~1855)
James M. Tapley was born in 1814 in GA. From 1820-1850 he was living in Emanuel, GA, located near Swainsboro. The 1850 census shows him living with his aunt, Sarah Tapley, age 75 (born 1775). She is also present in the 1820-1840 census in Emanuel. The 1860 census shows him living in Wrightsville, Johnson County, GA with his wife Martha (born 1826) and children: John, Mary, Elizabeth, James, Jane and George Washington. The 1870 census shows him still living in Wrightsville, GA but now with 4 more children: William, Cincinnatius, Francis and Canneseusla [spelling?]. I haven't been able to find any family members in the 1880 census. James died abt 1855 in GA.
Cincinnatius C. Tapley (1864-1930)
Cincinnatius C. [C. may stand for Clifton] Tapley, was born [or Jan 20, 1864 in Johnson, GA (census indicates born June 1862) and died April 20, 1930 in GA. He was married June 8, 1884 to Joanna Mixon, daughter of Richard Mixon and Julia Ann Rowland. Joanna was the wife of Cincinnatius' brother William Tapley who died in 1883. William and Joanna had 2 children, James and Sallie who were living with Cincinnatius and Joanna in Kite, Johnson Co, GA in 1900. Cincinnatius and Joanna had 8 children: 1) Mary Frances Tapley, born Sept. 13, 1887 in Johnson, GA; died Aug. 8, 1979; 2) Seth M. Tapley, born April 24, 1889 in Johnson, GA; died Nov. 15, 1941 in Boiling Springs, GA; Vena "Vennie" Belle Tapley, born August 1881 in Johnson, GA; 4) Ila Jane Tapley, born March 1895 [fs says March 15, 1891in Johnson, GA]; died Dec 26, 1984 in Vidalia, Toombs, GA; 5) Nannie Lou Belia Tapley, born 1896 in Johnson, GA; 6) Richard Roy Clayton Tapley, born April 1898 in Johnson, GA; died 1966; 7) Baby or Bobby Tapley, born 1901 in GA; and 8) Blount Tapley, born 1903 in Johnson, GA and died 1963. In 1910, the family had moved to Soperton, GA just south of Wrightsville, GA. It appears that Cincinatius was called "Cinci", given that his name appears as "Since" in the 1900 census. He died April 20, 1930 in GA.
Seth M. Tapley (1889-1941)
Seth M. Tapley was born April 24, 1889 in Johnson, GA and died Nov. 15, 1941 in Boiling Springs, GA. Like his father and grandfather, he was a farmer. He married Bettie M. Phillips in 1913. They had 6 children: 1) Kenneth P. Tapley, born July 14, 1915 in Treutlen, GA; died October 11, 1998 in Thomaston, GA, age 83, who married Christine Farr; 2) Carrie W. Tapley, born 1917 in GA; 3) Helen M. Tapley, born 1920 in GA; 4) Leaf [spelling?] Tapley, born 1923 in GA; 5) Civil L. Tapley, born 1925 in GA; and Harward Tapley, born 1927 in GA.In 1920, the family was living in Soperston, GA not far from Wrightsville (about half way between Macon and Savannah, GA. In 1930, the family was living in Treutlen, GA also not far from Wrightsville. Their name is misspelled in the 1930 census as "Taple".
