Looking for info on the descendants of Nathan Taunton/Tanton (b. c1813; d. 1841, Macon Co., GA) and Nancy Underwood (b. c1813, GA). They had the following children:
1. John W. Taunton - b. c1834, GA.
2. Penelope “Penny” Taunton - b. c1836, GA; m. William Pinkney Whittington, 1854, Taylor Co., GA.
3. Melissa M. Taunton - b. c1838, GA; m. Thomas Downing, 1855, Taylor Co., GA.
4. Nathan (or Matthew?) Taunton - b. c1842, GA.
Nathan Taunton was shot and killed in 1841 by Robert T. Downing, and following Nathan’s death, his widow Nancy married Jasper F. McGlamery. The Taunton children are all listed in Jasper McGlamery’s household in the 1850 census in Macon Co., GA, but John, Penelope (and her husband William Whittington), and Nathan/Matthew all disappeared from GA by the time the 1860 census was taken. Where did they go? Melissa and her husband William Downing were listed in Taylor Co., GA in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, but they too disappear from GA after that. Where did they go? And was Melissa’s husband William Downing related to Robert T. Downing, who had killed Melissa’s father?
I’d love to hear from anyone who recognizes any of these individuals.
