Kathy:
I am a descendent of William Tanner of North Kingstown, Rhode Island who is generally accepted as the oldest son of William Tanner of South Kingstown, Rhode Island by his first wife, Hannah Tibbitts. I have an original copy of the book published by George C. Tanner published in 1905. Unless there has been found some new records, no one knows who was the father of William Tanner of South Kingstown, RI. Some people have listed him as Francis but as far as I know, no one has presented any data to back that up. Also, no one knows from where William Tanner immigrated from other than he was from England. Some people listed him as coming from Southeast England, others, such as George C. Tanner, thought he came from “the west of England”. The first mention of William Tanner in the Colonies was May 12, 1682 as a witness to a deed of Francis Houlding of Warwick. I do know that there is a record of a William Tanner of Duckington, England being sent to America in 1680. This William Tanner was a reprieved prisoner but it does not say where in America he was sent. Outside the fact that he was sent to the Colonies in 1680 and William Tanner of South Kingstown, RI is first listed as being in RI in 1682, it is anyone’s guess as to whether the William Tanner of Duckington could be the William Tanner was the South Kingstown, RI. From what I have learned, Duckington is towards the west of England. A Jane Tanner of Duckington was sent to the Colonies a couple of years later. There are also listed several Tanner’s in a town near Duckington. The names tended to be Francis, William, Thomas and I think John. All these names tend to run in the RI Tanner’s, but again it is anyone’s guess as to their connection to the RI Tanner’s
