I regards to Charity, I have met one Cherokee from the Western Band in OK whose maiden name was Tanner. She told me that there are several Tanners who are members of their tribe and reside on the OK Reservation.
Also, I recently read a book that is supposed to be a biography of a John Tanner who lived as a boy, in the early to mid-1700s, with his family on a farm just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. He was captured by a band of indians (I think Chipewa). He was eventually adopted by the indians and raised as an indian. After he grew up, he went in search of his roots; unsucesssfully tried to live as a white man, but felt too restrained.I think he eventually ended up in the area around AR an OK. He was always known as John Tanner, even after adopton.
