Bill,

First, your reasoning on Andrew's date of birth sounds logical to me. For the moment, we'll eliminate Absalom as a possible father, although I still can't figure out why there's no trace of his son Andrew anywhere except in the estate records.

Second, I'd love to get a copy of that 1845 obituary if it has any information whatsoever about Andrew Tankersley of Dahlonega. I've been trying to figure out for years just where he fits in. I think he might possibly have been connected with my South Carolina branch of the family, which is a mystery in itself.

Third, although I can't prove this beyond question, I'm inclined to think the Elizabeth Tankersley who was in Monroe County in 1830 was the widow of George Green Tankersley Sr. of Columbia County. The Columbia County Tankersleys were a wealthy family of planters on the Savannah River, and this is the only branch of the family I'm aware of who owned slaves in any sort of quantity. Here's an excerpt on George and Elizabeth from the text of my genealogy-in-progress:

On July 18, 1798 in Columbia County, Georgia, George Tankersley married Elizabeth Hatcher Jackson, daughter of Valentine Hatcher of Jefferson County, Georgia and widow of Williams Jackson.

On January 3, 1821, George Tankersley’s widow, Elizabeth, made an agreement with his other heirs concerning their respective claims to his estate; since this couple had no surviving children, the additional heirs were George Tankersley’s siblings and their descendants.

After George Tankersley’s death, his widow Elizabeth appears to have moved to Monroe County, Georgia, where she is enumerated in the 1830 census with one male born 1780-1790, one male born 1805-1810, one male born 1810-1815, one male and two females born 1815-1820, and 17 slaves. The younger members of this household may have been grandchildren, since estate records show that Elizabeth had several children by her first husband, Williams Jackson. This census shows Elizabeth’s age as 60-70 (born 1760-1770), which is basically consistent with the c.1758 birth date from Hatcher family records, as well as with the estimated age of George Green Tankersley.

Keep me posted!

Harriet
