I just looked more closely at that rootsweb file and discovered that it's even less accurate than the Charles W. Tankersley book was. For instance:
Absalom Tankersley's apparent father William did not die in Blount County, Tennessee in 1814. This was the record of a different William Tankersley, who was killed in the War of 1812. John, Washington and Lucinda were the children of this second William Tankersley and are named in the widow's pension application of his wife, Sarah.
There's no record that Absalom Tankersley, who died c.1851, ever had a son named Joseph. All of Absalom's children are documented in his estate records, and there's no Joseph among them. The Joseph Tankersley in this rootsweb record was probably the son of Joseph Tankersley Sr. of Columbia County, whose family was living just north of Muscogee County in the 1840's.
Working backwards from William, it's my opinion (after 20 years of Tankersley research) that the rest of this lineage is just plain wrong. It would take me about fifty pages to explain why, and I think I've dealt with this in a bunch of previous messages, so please forgive me if I don't go into the whole thing again!
Sorry. Just can't seem to get down off that soapbox.
Harriet
