Bill -- I learn something new every day. I hadn't even connected George and Nancy of McNairy County with the Hardin County line, because George is traditionally thought by most researchers to have been the son of Samuel Tankersley and Rachel Scruggs. According to one of his descendants (now deceased), who had done a lot of work on the family, he married Nancy Strawn in 1835. Supposedly in 1854, and at least by 1860, he had died, and his family was living in Navarro County, Texas near the family of William Tankersley, who was supposedly another son of Samuel and Rachel. If he was Samuel and Rachel's son (and he did have a son named Samuel), their records show that his name was George W.

Now that I've looked a little more closely at the Tennessee map, I'm realizing it's possible that he could have been the George who turns up in those early Hardin County records. I hadn't realized McNairy was right there across the river. D'oh! Having just re-thought my theory on the Hardin County Tankersleys, I may have to turn right around and re-think it again. Oh, well.

Like I said. These guys are really tough to sort out. Every time I try, I get another headache.

Harriet
