oh oh Tanaka is one of the most common names in Japan. Literally translated, it means middle field. Ta or Da = rice field and naka = middle. Owning rice fields was very important. But there are many ways to trace Japanese names. Sometimes, families would take the "Ta" from another name they were descended from, like Takaki or Tatsumi or the Naka from Nakamura or Nakatsuka. Get names of your ancestors and ancestral village from immigration papers. Then write to the prefectural office to get the name of the Buddhist Temple and/or Shinto shrine in your village for information on the family.
