can anyone verify this theory?

according to my family, based in CT, the Talmadge legacy stemmed from this:
Capt Thomas Talmadge of somewhere in England settled in New York in 1700 and something.
He had 3 sons: one stayed in the east, one went to the mid-west, and one went farther west to California.
Thus, the Talmadge name and family was spread across America.

is there any truth behind this? i can track geneology so far back as to the 18th century but i've never found anything confirming this, well other than oral tradition.

*cheers
