After I wrote my post to you I went out and looked up Catherine that was living with James in 1870. On ancestry.com on the Talley board a Newton G Talley posted some very detailed information about this family. He says that John Talley died in 1843 and that his wife Mary Catherine "Kitty" Grady brought the family to Batholomew county from Kentucky to settle on land he was given for service in the war of 1812. James is listed as one of their children. I've looked on the 1850 census and can't find them in the township of Columbus in Batholomew County, Indiana. I'll need to go to Mercer County, Kentucky and see if I find a trace of them.
