Richard Talent
by Robert A. Tallant
(Tallent newsletter 1st and 3rd quarter 1992)
Robert Carter was a wealthy Virginia plantation and landowner, having many thousands of acres, countless slaves and servants, livestock, etc.On his death in Lancaster County, VA in 1732, we find he made five wills, four correcting or changing the original will as his fortune rose and fell.
The third will dated 12 September 1728 was witnessed by Rich'd Talent, John Conner, Arthur Neale, R. Lee, John Harvey, and Barnabas Burch.
The forth will dated 9 June 1730 was witnessed by Rich'd Talent, Richard Chapman, John Conner and John Toulton.
The fifth will dated 3rd and 20th day of July 1730 was witnessed by Rich. Talent, John Toulton, Rich. Chapman, and John Conner. It would seem from the gradual change in his signature that he reached a close and more casual acquaintance with squire Carter and with his neighbors. All the above dates were taken from the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography published by the VA. Historical Society for the years ending June 1899 Volume VI.
In spite of an intense research through the VA counties along the Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James Rivers and the VA State Archives, I can find no other records of Richard Talent.
Robert A. Tallant.
After the publication of "Richard Talent" in our Family Newsletter, I (Robert A. Tallant) received a nice letter from Robert Tallant Laudon with suggestions on where to look for further reference to Richard. In searching the deeds and land grants records, we found the original 1,600 acres in Robert Carter's plantation "Carrotoman" grew and grew but no Richard Talent was found in these records so he was not a landowner.
A search of Robert Carter's Journals and the Letter Books of his plantation also failed to disclose information on Richard Talent. But as you can see, we were deep into the records of Robert Carter in what are known as the Carter Papers.
Found were the partially corrected transcripts of Robert Carter's diary 1722-1728.Here on 3 March 1725 he states: "My servant Talent discovered to me his marriage".Later on 9 March 1725 he writes: "A rainy Day. I went to court in my barge, my sons with me.We dined at Pines on Woodwards entertainment. My servants Richard Talent, Elizabeth his wife, Arthur Neal, Charles Sulavan bound for six years.
It appears that Richard Talent was Robert Carter's valet or personal servant at Carrotoman Plantation and that some arrangement existed which bound Richard to his position for a certain period of time. However, whatever these agreements were they appear to have never been filed in a court of record. It is interesting that when Richard revealed his marriage that he and his wife, Elizabeth, were immediately bound for six years (a period of extending to within a year of Carter's death).Arthur Neal who was also a bound servant to Carter was also witness to part of Carter's wills.
Further from Carter's diary:
7 March (1725) "Went to visit Mr. Wormeley.Found him dead and laid out.He died about 11 o'clock."
8 March"Was at court"
9 MarchHe tells of giving sums of money to several of his sons and providing pistols for two daughters should they travel from the plantation.Next: "I went to my little mill.Carpenter told me he should be ready to raise on Wednesday."
10 March"A hard NW wind. I got my Pinnace finisht. My son made fires.I could not fetch him.My pinnace fecht Robin over.Went to Mr. Wormeley's funeral, rowed against a hard wind.Jack Talent taken sick."
11 March"Mr. Wormeley's funeral in this manner.Mr. Yates rid before the hers (e) that (was) drawn by four coach horses led by four slaves in mourning. The paul bearers rid on horses on each side of the corps (e) in mourning hatt bands, scarfs and gloves.Relations followed in coaches. There was at the funeral 5 coaches, one calash. We had burnt Madera wine, a frosted cake. The corp (e) was carried into the church while prayers were read, then carried to the internment. No sermon. Twas forbid by the deceased....I came home that night thro bitter weather.Left (Jack) Talent behind me very sick.
This is all the reference to Talents in Carter's diary dated 1722-1728.We are informed that no other Carter diaries are known to exist. We are reminded that Carter's mansion burned to the ground before his death and we constantly reminded that a wealth of records in this area were destroyed by the British in the War of 1812.
It seems we have 3 new Tallents now.Richard, Jack (wasn't this a common nickname for John, then and now?)and Richard's wife who became after his death the enigmatic Elizabeth Tallant of Anson County, North Carolina.
On 23 Oct. 1764, Elizabeth Tallant bought, for the sum of four pounds proc. money, 25 acres of land from Charles Higdon. This 25 acres was part of a 100 acre land grant secured by Leonard Higdon in 1762.Lott Tallant sold this 25 acres on 5 Feb. 1775 to Thomas Hall (Quit Claim) for eight pounds proclamation money.taken from "Land Abstracts of North Carolina".
Married women didn't buy or own land on their own in colonial days, but a widow with children still living at home might buy a plot of land for a home. This is what Elizabeth probably did. Her son Lott Tallant then sold this plot after his mother's death. Also, Elizabeth probably had grown and married children living in this area.
A 1763 Anson County, North Carolina tax list includes the name of three Tallants: Aaron, Moses, and Thomas.
Possible children of Richard and Elizabeth Tallant (Talent):
1. Thomas Tallant married Hannah __?__
2. Moses Tallant married Sarah __?__
3. Aaron Tallant married Sarah __?__
4. Martha Tallant (Talant) married Daniel Lowe (he was born in France) (one account states: Daniel Lowe, Sr. married an "Indian" woman who took the Tallant name.)
5. Lott Tallant married Mary __?__(Lott Tallant died in Bulloch County, GA in 1819. In a Bulloch County deed dated 15 May 1815, Lott and Mary gave land and slaves to "our friends" John and Mary Hendricks, to possess during their natural lives and after their decease and go to my nephews, John Hendricks, Jr. and James Hendricks, sons of aforesaid John and Mary Hendricks.
6. Mary Tallant married John Hendricks
THOMAS TALLANT
Thomas Tallant was probably born in the 1720 or 30's and died around 1800. His wife's name was Hannah __?__ (maiden name unknown) according to an Anson County, NC land deed dated 24 Jan. 1766. Thomas Tallants first land purchase in Anson County was on 20 Sept. 1757 when he bought land on the southwest side of the Pee Dee River on Smith Creek from Nicholas Broadway and his wife, Elizabeth, for 15 pounds (Virginia money). Aaron, Moses, and Thomas Tallant were listed on a 1763 Anson County, NC taxpayer's list. Thomas and Moses Tallant were two of 260 signers of a "Regulators" petition from Anson County to the State Assembly, 9 Oct. 1769. On 12 Oct. 1775, the following Tallants signed with others to divide Anson County to form the new county of Montgomery: Aaron Tallant, Lott Tallant, Moses Tallant, and Thomas Tallent. "Abstracts of Anson County" have records of Thomas serving on jury duty. Possible children of Thomas and Hannah Tallant:
