The Mount of Caroline Co., VA 1700 - 1750
This is a follow-up from Peter Sandlund to Beverley Ballantine;
Many thanks for the detailed information about the location of "The Mount". I was delighted to learn that the house is still standing. I am planning to visit it when the weather improves.
I also spotted your comments re Robert Taliaferro in reply to Patty Stringfellow. I am intrigued by your information regarding the daughters of Robert Taliaferro and Jane Bankhead. This is of course quite different from the earkier listing on the Taliaferri family forum, which lists Jane, Sarah, Lucy. and Nancy Ann. I have long tried to find the proper place in the Taliaferro family tree for Martha Taliaferro who married Sherwood James Jr in Caroline Co., VA in ca 1745. This couple moved to St Mark's Parish, Craven Co. SC in 1752.
There are of course two other Martha Taliaferros, but they married William Hunter of Spotsylvaia Co and Anthony Foster respectively.
Before going any further I would appreciate your comments
on this discrepancy. Your details sound convincing, and I hope to go forward with the Martha Taliaferro/Sherwood James Jr. connection.
For your guidance I should mention that Sherwood James Sr. was the tavern keeper at Port Royal, and that he and his entire family moved to South Carolina in 1752. He continued his profession as a tavern keeper at Stateburg, SC. When Sherwood James Sr died in 1764, Sherwood Jr. inherited the tavern. Also note that the first son of Sherwood James Jr. and Martha Taliaferro was named Taliaferro James.
Am I on the right track?
Again, many thanks for your help. Regards. Peter Sandlund
