TALBOT CASTLE is located near Trim, co. Meath, Ireland,
across the River Boyne from Trim. By doing an internet search, one can see photos of TALBOT CASTLE. The "Yellow Steeple" was once part of the bell tower of St. Mary's Abbey, rebuilt in 1368. In 1415, SIR JOHN TALBOT, then Viceroy of Ireland, took part of the ruins of the abbey and built a manor house known as TALBOT CASTLE. This is the same Sir John Talbot who was the first Earl of Shrewsbury, Henry V (1387-1422)made Sir John Talbot the Lieutenant of Ireland in 1414. Sir John Talbot was called away to the French war in 1419, leaving his brother Richard Talbot as deputy. Sir John Talbot, first Earl of Shrewsbury died in 1453. TALBOT CASTLE is not the same as Malahide Castle, located near Dublin, which was the seat of another branch of the Talbot family for several hundred years, after being granted to an earlier Richard Talbot in the last years of Henry II (1133-89). TALBOT CASTLE was used in the 18th century as an exclusive school.
