Hello Clinton, I come from a family of those Missouri Talbert's and have heard similar stories from my father...but nothing about horse thievery. But there were certainly stories of murder and mayhem in those earlier days of my grandfather. My father was born in 1894 and moved by covered wagon from Kirksville, Missouri to McCook, Nebraska around September 7, 1897. My grandfather must have left Kirksville in a hurry because my grandmother was pregnant and had her fourth child along the way. They owned several sections of ground around McCook, but I don't think it was an entire county. My grandfather Frank had an awnery streak a mile long and was an alchoholic. He was a barber in town and would come home drunk and parade around on the porch naked as a jaybird...while the children (my father included) would hide out in the cornfield waiting for him to go to sleep. But most of the stories were blown out of proportion by the family. Like the one about being related to Pretty Boy Floyd. It was only a rumor as I discovered later. In those days, when the work was all done, I think they sat around on the porch and sang while playing their fiddles, guitars and piana's...that's (pie anna's). That was early TV in those days. Then, when they didn't know the real truth about a particular story, they blew it completely out of proportion for their own excitement. I would love to see what that diary from William Talbert says. My father had a brother William (Uncle Bill). My grandfather had a brother named William H. Talbert. My great-grandfather's father was William Talbert (born in 1800-died 1869) who live in Preble County, Ohio and was a master carpenter. His father was Joseph Talbert who also had a brother named William Talbert. Would enjoy hearing from you. Terry Notify Administrator about this message?
