I was driving through Nebraska yesterday from Minnesota and my family and I stopped in Gibbon, NE. I went to the Riverside cemetery (where we discovered we left our camera in MN, but we located two TAGUE headstones. One was very old and barely readable but it was obviously infants were buried there. I believe they were infant twins of John Norton Tague (Joseph Harrison's brother) and Rachel Wilkens (sp?) Roy and Ray b. 1885 d. aged 23 days. I do have this written down in some other places also. Here is what we could read: On the front: Children of JN and RT Tague On the right side: Roy March, 18, 1885 Aged 23 days On the left side: fairly unreadable but looked like same as right side The other head stone look newer, like it was a replacement at one time. It had two people on it. Annie Tague d. November, 10 1886 Aged 64 years (Is this Anne Buchanan? Most of what I have seen says she was born in 1811, but this would put her at 1821? I also have seen that she died in 1880 or 1881 - now more work to do!) The other inscription is for Carrie Tague d. March 6, 1896 aged 28. This begins to confuse me more, since I do not have any other Carrie Tague, other than my GGrandmother, daughter of Joseph Harrison Tague. Could this someone that married into the Tague line? Is it a daughter of David Tague? Was her nickname Carrie, but birth name something else? Is this Carrie LaCount wife of Simeon Tague b. 1853, brother of Joseph, John and David? She would have been 15 years younger than him... not unheard of? These two head stones (I say head stones but the infant one is more like a small monument) are right next to each other. Also, there was other Tague's living in the area earlier (Horace Tague's name is on a monument in the middle of town celebrating original 1871 settlers. I also read in a Buffalo County history that an early squatter near Gibbon was Thomas Tague. The monument in town reads: Erected 1953 In Memory of the Soldiers Free Homestead Colony April 7, 1871 It then lists the people who traveled by train to form the town of Gibbon (mostly Union veterans) The bottom of the monument is lists more names: Honorary members attending the arrival of the colony (there are 10-15 names with the last one being Tague, Horace. (I saw some work online stating that this Horace Tague was originally from IA) What made our line of Tague's go to Nebraska? The only land purchases (or grants) I could find were for Joseph Harrison Tague (3). It does look like these were grants for Civil War service, since Gibbon was mostly settled by ex-Union soldiers brought there by the Union Pacific railroad. Did his brother and family come with him and live and work his land? Vol. IV, pages 713 - 761. Name of Pensioner or Dependent County Post Office Tague, David Buffalo Gibbon Tague, Jos. H. Buffalo Gibbon Who is David Tague? Joseph Harrison's brother b. 2 FEB 1844 married Viola Wise. He was also living in Gibbon, NE in 1883. Was this the third plot of land? Where did he go? Did all four brother live in Gibbon, decide it wasn't for them and scattered? I have not found any census showing any of these Tague's in NE in 1890? Joseph, David and John were all GAR veterans, but why aren't they in the Land Patent rolls? John is not listed in 1883 Pensioner's list? Joseph was in the 6th Indiana Infantry Regiment, and the other tow were in the 5th or 6th Indiana Calvary. Here is another piece of the pie. I found this marriage. I believe this Sarah is the sister of Joseph Harrison Tague. In my info I have here born in 1839 and married Louis Veyette, but the information below would have her born around 1850 and married near Gibbon, NE in 1883. Her parents would have been Annie Tague and Lemeul Tague, but why wasn't at least Annie listed if she was still living in Gibbon in 1883? I am beginning to wonder about all of the information about Ann and Lemeul? Was Lemuel's name really Samuel? More work to do straightening this out unless you have some other solid direction to go. BUFFALO COUNTY MARRIAGES VOL. 2 1883 Date Persons Age Birth Parents 4 Sep VEYETTE, Louis 34 Canada Godford Veyette 1883 TAGUE, Sarah 33 Indiana (??) I looks like Joseph Harrison Tague went to Council Bluffs, IA and then to Oregon. John Norton Tague left shortly thereafter (1895? - they had a son born in 1894 in Gibbon) and went to Oklahoma.
