Hi Pam,
Leonard John Tagg b. June 13 1952 is my husband. He is the son of Leonard William Ernest Tagg b 15 May 1922 in Kingston, Surrey died Nov 1990. He married Mabel Wilkins. Leonard William Ernest's father was Leonard Frank (Ernest) who married Alice Rosetta Lillian McDonald. Leonard Frank died about 1954 and his wife (Alice) came to the states with my husband's father and family. I believe that Thomas George is my husband's great grandfather. I have papers that date back to the boatbuilding business that was built on Tagg's Island, but they are in storage in Florida and I am in NY so I am searching for whatever other information I can find to compare to the papers I have when I finally get them out of storage. It sounds like you and my husband must be cousins of some kind. Where did you hear that Thomas George "squatted" on the island? I heard that he bought a part of it and put up his boat business and a hotel/casino. There is a story in the family that either Thomas George or his son lost the island in a card game. It was supposed to have been signed over on a 99 year lease that was finished about 1998 or '99. I have found no proof that he owned the whole island, but maybe your story is the truth. My husband remembers the Thames Hotel as being built by his great grandfather's brother. Thanks for your info-it gives me more names to search for-if you have any more I'd love to hear it. There is also another cousin in Australia who has contacted me. Her name is Helen Edith McEwen (Tagg). Her grandfather went to Australia in early 1900's. His name was William Frederick Tagg and married a Edith Hughes. She also has heard the story of the island being lost in a card game.
Again, thanks so much,
