Tagg family of Tagg's Island

I am looking for the Taggs from the Surrey area. My husband's great-great grandfather was a "boatsman to the Queen" I believe his name was Ernest or William. I think there is a Thomas in the family also. My husband's father was William Ernest Tagg married to Mabel Wilkins. my father-in-law's mother was a McDonald. the Wilkins are supposed to be part gypsy. The Taggs used to own Tagg's Island, a boat-making business, and a hotel on the island. The story is that the great-great grandfather gambled the island away in a card game. Anyone out there ever heard of any of these Tagg's?
