Since posting my original message, I have made a little progress in researching my Tagg ancestors but, despite a family story that my Grandmother (Charlotte Tagg) was somehow linked to the Taggs of Tagg’s Island, I have still not found evidence of such a link. My Tagg ancestors seem to be firmly routed in east London, at least as far back as the early 1800s.
Charlotte Tagg was born 5 November 1877 in Stepney. Charlotte’s siblings were Sarah Ann, Elizabeth, Walter Albert, Edward James, Catherine and Matilda. Their parents were William Tagg and Sarah Ann Fisher (married 7 May 1866 Bethnal Green). William Tagg’s father was a James Tagg but I have not been able to establish conclusively any more than that. I have not found them with certainty in censuses prior to 1871 (the name Tagg is often mis-transcribed). However, there is a James Tagg and family in the 1851 census living in Bermondsey, with a son William of the right age, who could be the aforementioned James Tagg but I am by no means certain.
If you have any information about the Taggs in the early 1800s that might help me to fill in some of the gaps in my research and/or establish a link with the Taggs of Tagg’s Island, I would be very glad to have it.
